There seems to be an interesting difference between how AI professionals view AGI. When someone is wired for AGI-as-destiny, and another person is wired for “WHAO!!! look what we can build today,” they end up talking past each other:
AGI-motivated people feel:
“If AGI is uncertain or far away, what am I even doing with my life?“
Build-motivated people feel:
“We’re in the most interesting engineering moment in human history - how is that not enough?“
Both are valid, but they come from very different sources of meaning.
AGI is a mythic motivation.
The other is a craft motivation.
Myth fuels revolutions.
Craft builds civilizations.
